The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university curriculum, culminating with intense
multi-hour examinations in six areas, that meets the needs of highly motivated secondary school students. Further
requirements to qualify for the IB diploma include satisfactory completion of a theory of knowledge course, an
independent extended essay research project, and CAS (Creative Action Service) hours. Completing the IB program
leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.
Students learn more than a collection of facts.
The IB Diploma Programme prepares students for university and encourages them to:
- ask challenging questions
- learn how to learn
- develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture
- develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.
As administered by Escambia County at Pensacola High School, IB is a magnet program open to able learners who
meet admissions qualifications based on GPA, national achievement test percentiles, and teacher recommendations.
Beginning in the ninth and tenth grades, students enroll in pre-IB courses (as well as conventional high school electives)
that prepare them for the rigors of eleventh and twelfth grade IB courses. Furthermore, students take AP courses
and exams in several areas. Along with the intangible benefits of knowing they have persevered through an extremely
challenging high school curriculum, IB graduates frequently receive generous scholarship assistance in attending
post-secondary institutions and historically proclaim that they feel very well prepared for college—in fact, the academic
transition is practically painless.
PHS IB students do more than just study; they are fully involved in all facets of high school life,
participating in athletics,
student government, clubs—and producing this website!
Further information can be obtained from the IB Coordinator, Mrs. Deanna Gordon, at 595-1500 extension 245.
